So we are nearing the end of the first run through the global citizenship course and we have finally started our community action project. Here is where we have deviated from the SOW more than usual.
Having read the specification and the SOW, the students have spent some time deliberating over what our action project should be. There were so many options to chose from, helping the labourers, working with an animal shelter, raising awareness about climate change and the Australian fires. Last year the Special Olympics was held in Abu Dhabi, it was such an amazing event it inspired our students so keep the spirit of inclusion alive.
Our main aim is to create 'Buddy Hour' where students from our school can volunteer with an special education school in our locality. So far the students have made contact with the school and researched their mission and vision for the school community. As the class group is small, it was decided that we would bring some other volunteers from the school to interact and play games with the students. An application form has been created to help the students select the right candidates to join us in the 'Buddy Hour'. It is hoped that we can volunteer once a term with this school and that it will not just be a one time event. Posters have also been generated to raise awareness about the action project. These will be placed around the school in the coming weeks.
